New journal article on Australian internet filter.

- - By Dan O'Reilly-Rowe
Abstract
This paper investigates the implications of the Australian Government’s proposed Internet filtering system in the light of Australia’s blanket prohibition of ‘child pornography’ (including cartoons, animation, drawings, digitally manipulated photographs, and text) for Australian fan communities of ACG and slash. ACG/slash fan groups in Australia and elsewhere routinely consume, produce and disseminate material containing ‘prohibited content’ (i.e. featuring fictitious ‘under-age’ characters in violent and sexual scenarios). Moreover, a large portion of the fans producing and trading in these images are themselves ‘under age’. Focusing specifically upon the overwhelmingly female fandom surrounding Japanese ‘Boys’ Love’ (BL) manga, the paper argues that legislators have misrecognised the nature and scope of these online communities. It is also argued that the sheer scale of this kind of material, and the fact that it is legal for download and purchase in jurisdictions such as the US and Japan, make attempts to prohibit access to these purely fictional depictions in Australia unworkable.

Will Paid Content Put Publishing Back in the Black? - eMarketer
Sales of e-books are growing in the US, particularly with formats compatible with Amazon's Kindle. Will this trend spread globally, specially with the launch of the iPad, and have greater detrimental effects on the (book) publishing industry?
On the other hand, magazines and newspapers still seem to have more success in their printed formats as readers are not too keen on having to pay for news that they can get for free elsewhere.Tags: digital, publishing, e-book, e-reader, Kindle, Amazon, e-bookstore

- THE PERTH-BASED internet service provider iiNet, which won a remarkable victory against Hollywood in the federal court last week, used to advertise its various broadband plans on commercial radio. Their ads began, “The question is, how big is a Gig?” The answer: “A Gig is about 500 hi-res photos or about 300 songs or five episodes of the Golden Girls. At iiNet we explain this to you so you can choose a broadband plan that’s right for you… it’s not the size of the Gig, it’s how you choose to use it.”
- From the point of view of the movie industries, the ISPs were there at the scene of the crime, profited from it, and are complicit in it.
- . Despite its love for the next big thing and the latest special effects, Hollywood is a slow-moving beast. In some senses it is still living in the 1930s, the golden age of classical Hollywood cinema. This was a time when the vertically integrated studios made their movies in-house, had long-term contracts with stars, and controlled the cinemas that screened their films. The public had no choice but to see what local cinemas screened, and cinemas had no choice but to screen what the studios supplied.
- The VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston Strangler is to the woman home alone.”

MIT Convergence Culture Consortium: Archives
Tags: anime, streaming, DTO, DRM
- As a major portal for the community around Japanese animation, Crunchyroll has made a decision that reflects the current trends and behaviors of online television.
- Crunchyroll.com has a strange history: it began as a host for fansubbed episodes of Japanese animation and Korean dramas, then in early 2009 the website partnered with Japanese companies to stream anime online in a timely manner from the initial Japanese release on TV. Over the past year, they're accumulated a strong community and developed business models around a subscription service for high-quality streaming video and exclusive content. Most of the video, however, is offered in standard-quality, free of charge, spanning most of their series, which tended to include every episode. The success of the unlimited, free business model seems unclear, as the portal recently began to take down certain videos after a stated period (but most likely spurred by the Japanese producers).
- Crunchyroll had implemented a download-to-own service into its three-part business model (ad-supported free streaming, subscription, and DTO). However, after today's announcement, it seems that Crunchyroll will be eliminating the DTO service in favor of a pure streaming model.
- if Crunchyroll's predictions are true -- that "online streaming video is the future" -- I wonder how much of this reflects the cultural practices of watching television to which anime fans have become acclimated, especially now that a subset of younger fans have grown up watching anime primarily via online platforms. Perhaps the move toward online streaming represents a shift in the anime fandom, in which fans no longer want to own media, but merely consume online (with potential negative effect to an industry that has relied on sales of physical media for the past few decades).
