  • On the campus of Penn State University, a rivalry between a rogue campus blog and the official newspaper has become a fascinating mirror of the strife between old and new media.

  • Sameh Habeeb, journalist and founder of The Palestine Telegraph will be visiting our campus next week. His work as contributor and editor of an online newspaper in a conflict zone is of direct relevance to our work on Digital Research and Publishing in ARIN6912. I encourage all MDCC students to attend.

  • Simple video on the future of publishing, with a twist

  • Very interesting article on Hollywood vs. downloads and ISPs.

    • THE PERTH-BASED internet service provider iiNet, which won a remarkable victory against Hollywood in the federal court last week, used to advertise its various broadband plans on commercial radio. Their ads began, “The question is, how big is a Gig?” The answer: “A Gig is about 500 hi-res photos or about 300 songs or five episodes of the Golden Girls. At iiNet we explain this to you so you can choose a broadband plan that’s right for you… it’s not the size of the Gig, it’s how you choose to use it.”
    • From the point of view of the movie industries, the ISPs were there at the scene of the crime, profited from it, and are complicit in it.
    • . Despite its love for the next big thing and the latest special effects, Hollywood is a slow-moving beast. In some senses it is still living in the 1930s, the golden age of classical Hollywood cinema. This was a time when the vertically integrated studios made their movies in-house, had long-term contracts with stars, and controlled the cinemas that screened their films. The public had no choice but to see what local cinemas screened, and cinemas had no choice but to screen what the studios supplied.
    • The VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston Strangler is to the woman home alone.”

    • Twitter @anywhere is designed to simplify the integration process and to
provide a more seamless user experience.
    • Whilst the framework
is still in development, Twitter has already announced a number of
      founding partners on their blog
including Amazon, AdAge, Bing, Citysearch, Digg, eBay, The Huffington
Post, Meebo, MSNBC.com, The New York Times, Salesforce.com, Yahoo!, and
      YouTube.

YouTube user Socialnerdia has posted some rather shaky cameraphone footage of @anywhere in action from SXSW which gives a good idea of how @anywhere will work.

The book will answer three key questions: What does the world look like through the lens of Google?; How is Google's ubiquity affecting the production and dissemination of knowledge?; and how has the corporation altered the rules and practices that govern other companies, institutions, and states?
  • Another example of an open book project. Ken Wark is one scary smart dude.

    • Together with the Institute for the Future of the Book I produced this website as a way to think about games. We released Version 1.1 back in 2006. Based on the many thoughtful and careful comments people made on it, I revised Gamer Theory and came up with Version 2.0, which is available here. Comments on Version 1.1 are now closed, but we welcome comments and discussion here at Version 2.0. I will probably not produce a Version 3.0 of this book.

    • The U.S. Federal Communications Commission on Monday unveiled some details of its broadband plan, which aims to speed up Web connections and make high-speed Internet available to more Americans
    • 90 percent of Americans high-speed Internet access at home by 2020.
    • Its goal is to give 100 million households access to Internet connections that transfer 100 megabits of data per second.

The average U.S. Internet speed today is much slower -- only 3.9 megabits per second, according to the Internet monitor Akamai

    • Derek Turner, the research director for the nonprofit group Free Press, said the broadband plan does not do enough to reduce the cost of high-speed Internet connections, which he said is the biggest barrier to adoption

    • As a major portal for the community around Japanese animation, Crunchyroll has made a decision that reflects the current trends and behaviors of online television.
    • Crunchyroll.com has a strange history: it began as a host for fansubbed episodes of Japanese animation and Korean dramas, then in early 2009 the website partnered with Japanese companies to stream anime online in a timely manner from the initial Japanese release on TV. Over the past year, they're accumulated a strong community and developed business models around a subscription service for high-quality streaming video and exclusive content. Most of the video, however, is offered in standard-quality, free of charge, spanning most of their series, which tended to include every episode. The success of the unlimited, free business model seems unclear, as the portal recently began to take down certain videos after a stated period (but most likely spurred by the Japanese producers).
    • Crunchyroll had implemented a download-to-own service into its three-part business model (ad-supported free streaming, subscription, and DTO). However, after today's announcement, it seems that Crunchyroll will be eliminating the DTO service in favor of a pure streaming model.
    • if Crunchyroll's predictions are true -- that "online streaming video is the future" -- I wonder how much of this reflects the cultural practices of watching television to which anime fans have become acclimated, especially now that a subset of younger fans have grown up watching anime primarily via online platforms. Perhaps the move toward online streaming represents a shift in the anime fandom, in which fans no longer want to own media, but merely consume online (with potential negative effect to an industry that has relied on sales of physical media for the past few decades).
  • Following our discussion in class, I feel like we need to bring things back to the economics and history that underpins the concept of "creative commons". This poem is as old as capitalism itself, at the dawn of the era in which the private property and its development became equated with the drive for innovation.

We live in a time when the "creative commons" are being contested, and the walls are closing in...
