I don't think I entirely buy the idea that we're entering an era that is truly a return to oral traditions, in that I see written text as being a key feature of digital communication. More of a synthesis of print and pre-print modes. That said, I think that the Gutenberg Parenthesis idea a useful framework for thinking about the long history of human knowledge production and the place of "new" media in it.
Wikipedia amateurs face backlash from the experts - Times Online
An article from a few years ago that discusses the 'Citizendium' site - set up at the time as a rival to Wikipedia (which clearly, judging by the situation today, did not succeed as a true rival).
More interestingly, it dicusses the disconnect between the role of 'amateurs' and 'experts' - a classic dichotomy when considering digital publishing.

U.S. Students Suffering From Internet Addiction - Study - NYTimes.com
Although this isn't directly related to the subject, I think its an important emerging area of research. Internet addiction isn't yet recognised as a disorder by the American Psychiatric Association but I think its definitely time for that to change!
When I presented in class on multitasking it made me realise that this is a real problem, and that it has the potential to affect my productivity as a university student.

Companies increasingly see possibilities in augmented reality - CNN.com
This is the About page for Tumblr, the website I mentioned in class several weeks ago. It is basically a blogging platform, and it's user-friendly format makes it really easy to share content.
Users can source their own content or reblog other users' content (including photos, videos, hyperlinks etc.) and it is displayed on their 'dashboard' which basically aggregates everything that you and the users you follow have posted.
It's also incredibly addictive.

Apple Rejects Kid-Friendly Programming App | Gadget Lab | Wired.com
Tags: devices, apple, children, education
McIntosh said that Apple removed the app because it allegedly violated a rule in the iPhone developer agreement — clause 3.3.2, which states iPhone apps may not contain code interpreters other than Apple’s. The clause reads:
An Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwise. No interpreted code may be downloaded or used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple’s Documented APIs and built-in interpreter(s).
Daring Fireball blogger John Gruber, who first reported the removal of Scratch, explained that Apple’s intention with the “no interpreters” rule is to block meta-platforms such as Adobe Flash.
This video is a call to action, a great intro to the concept of authenticity and reputation when it comes to information online.

WePad - Designed in Germany | WePad
Some people seem to think life is all about the I, and the Me, Me, Me.
We beg to differ. To us, the power of many beats the power of one. That’s why we came up with the WePad: It’s the smarter solution for enjoying the Internet your way. Why? Because when you’re locked in, you get the Internet their way. It’s the opposite of free. Being told what you can see, what you can buy, and all the things you can not do – somehow, that just seems so 1984.
Why I won't buy an iPad (and think you shouldn't, either) - Boing Boing
Gadgets come and gadgets go. The iPad you buy today will be e-waste in a year or two (less, if you decide not to pay to have the battery changed for you). The real issue isn't the capabilities of the piece of plastic you unwrap today, but the technical and social infrastructure that accompanies it.
If you want to live in the creative universe where anyone with a cool idea can make it and give it to you to run on your hardware, the iPad isn't for you.
If you want to live in the fair world where you get to keep (or give away) the stuff you buy, the iPad isn't for you.
If you want to write code for a platform where the only thing that determines whether you're going to succeed with it is whether your audience loves it, the iPad isn't for you.

Digital economy bill backlash dominates e-election debate | Politics | guardian.co.uk
Digital Economy (DE) bill passes UK parliament with a near empty chamber.
Tags: law, piracy, internet, UK
Only one thing mattered to the UK's digital constituency this week: the digital economy bill. The election date announcement meant the #debill, as it is referred to on Twitter, was hurried through parliament before the election.
The last straw was when it was revealed that Stephen Timms –- the minister for Digital Britain – was under the impression that "IP address" referred to "intellectual property", rather than internet protocol.

BBC News - Plans to tackle internet piracy 'breach human rights'
Tags: law, internet, piracy, UK, copyright
"If the bill were passed as it stands, it would mean that a subscriber's internet access could be limited or even cut off on the grounds of an alleged infringement without any court having made an order against that subscriber.
"This in our view raises serious concerns with the European convention on human rights, which provides that everyone is entitled to a fair and public hearing within a reasonable time by an independent and impartial tribunal established by law."

UP 2.0: Some Theses on the Future of Academic Publishing
Tags: university, publishing, journals
With the control of other media, including almost all the large trade book publishers, passing to international media conglomerates that ruthlessly put requirements for profit far above the social value of content, and the rise of web-based social networking sites draining advertising revenue from newspapers and magazines, university presses have become, almost by default, the primary source of robust information and sustained analysis on domestic issues such as poverty, education, public health, gun control, immigration, incarceration, civil liberties, and political democracy, as well as on the international issues, including ideological and religious struggles, human rights, torture, and economic development, that are so roiling the planet.
The problem now for UP 2.0 is to find the digital analogues and multidimensional digital enrichments for some or all of these functions. The future of the presses depends on successfully negotiating the digital transition with the support of university allies and cyberinfrastructure-supported connectivity. But there is a downside: if university presses fail in their metamorphosis to UP 2.0, they will almost certainly go the way of the actual dinosaurs (in the days before dinosaurs were deemed too big to fail), and likely will be replaced in the rapid evolution of scholarly publishing by more nimble, more adaptable, more imaginative—though not yet visible—digital shrews.

Yale Daily News - ITS delays switch to Gmail

.
Google stores every piece of data in three centers randomly chosen from the many it operates worldwide in order to guard the company’s ability to recover lost information — but that also makes the data subject to the vagaries of foreign laws and governments, Fischer said. He added that Google was not willing to provide ITS with a list of countries to which the University’s data could be sent, but only a list of about 15 countries to which the data would not be sent.
Under the proposed switch, Yale might lose control over its data or could seem to endorse Google corporate policy and the large carbon footprint left by the company’s massive data centers. In addition, Fischer said, Google has a “one size fits all” customer service policy for its Google Apps clients, and the creation of a Google “monoculture” among e-mail users would cause severe problems when the company’s servers experience downtime or crashes.
